Case Study: Modeling, Simulation & Analysis

• Customer: Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Program Assessments & Evaluation (PA&E), Naval Forces Division (NFD)
• Challenge: Assess the optimal Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mission package for the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Several different configurations of sensors, weapons, and associated platforms needed to be analyzed for highest warfighting effectiveness.
• Solution: EMSolutions provided operations research, modeling & simulation, and quantitative analytic techniques in support of evaluation of high-level Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) and Measures of Performance (MOPs). Thousands of Monte Carlo scenario repetitions were run using the Naval Simulation System (NSS) software package to ensure the statistical significance of outputs and give an accurate representation of the risks associated with each configuration.
• Benefit: Our efforts supported sensor system refinement that boosted the potential ASW effectiveness of LCS in high-density threat environments. Working group liaisons were established with several program offices and recommendations were briefed up through the Director of OSD PA&E, NFD.
